Web Traffic Reports
Web server traffic reports for the University's main web server, www.sc.edu, are publicly available at http://www.sc.edu/reports/. This document contains information supporting the statistic report service offered on this server. These instructions apply only to reports created after 30 January 2000. Reports generated prior to 15 April 1999 have the form wwwstat.weekending.98xxxx.html. Reports generated between 15 April 1999 and 30 January 2000 have the form mmddyy.html.
Web server traffic reports are generated using analog. Web server statistics are generated every Sunday morning at 3. To read the statistics for your web site follow these steps:
- Access
http://www.sc.edu/reports/. Reports are named for the last date of the week. Find and access the report for the week you are interested in viewing (e.g., 20000227.html, where 2000 is the year, 02 the month, and 27 the day). CAUTION: These files can be very large!
- Interpret the report. The report has these main sections:
- General Summary
- The first section is the General Summary. This contains general information about traffic on the entire web server for the week, most notably the total number of hits ("Successful requests").
- Directory Report
- The Directory Report contains information about the total number of hits individual sites had for the week. There are three columns:
#reqs, %bytes, and directory. Find your web site's directory name (e.g., /isg/), and look in the #reqs on the same line for the total number of hits your web site generated, and in the %bytes column for the total percentage of data traffic your web site generated.
- Every directory with at least 1 successful request is listed in this section.
- Request Report
- The Request Report contains information about the total number of hits individual files (grouped by directory) had for the week. There are four columns:
#reqs, %bytes, last date, and directory. Find a file in your web site's directory (e.g., /isg/staff.html), and look in the #reqs on the same line for the total number of hits your web site generated, and in the %bytes column for the total percentage of data traffic your web site generated. last date is the last date and time that file was accessed.
- Every file with 25 or more successful requests is listed in this section.
- Failure Report
- The Failure Report contains information about the total number of failed requests for individual files that do not exist (grouped by directory) for the week. There are two columns:
#reqs, and file. If any files are listed there, there might be a bad link to some file in your web site.
- Every failed request is listed in this section.
