Can I install Trend software on my home computer?
The Trend Micro client is licensed for faculty, staff, and student computers engaged in USC teaching, learning, research, and administration, and is not intended for personal use. As students typically use their home computers in conjunction with their courses at USC, these are covered.

Can visiting students or visiting professors use TrendMicro?
The software is available at no charge for students, faculty and staff of the University. Visiting professors would be considered faculty while they are here. Go Back to List of Questions

What does the Wireless Protection option provide?
Wireless Protection installs a specialized client from your computer via hotsync to your PDA. At the moment, we are encouraging Notifylink users to avoid this product until we can test it further. Go Back to List of Questions

How can I obtain an MSI file so that I can distribute the client via Active Directory GPO?
A CD, intended for Network Managers, is available from Software Distribution that includes both .exe and .msi installers. Go Back to List of Questions

Can OLE Layers be explained in more detail?
OLE is an acronym for Object Linking and Embedding. This is used by Microsoft Office products to embed themselves in other Office products (such as embedding a Word document in a Power Point document). Unfortunately, some viruses can embed themselves in these layers as well. The Trend Micro Office Scan client scans down into OLE layers to find embedded viruses. We chose a default of 3 layers as a balance between protection and performance. Go Back to List of Questions

Can Roaming Mode be defined?
Note: Roaming Mode is unnecessary and disabled in the default installation. Roaming Mode's primary purpose is to allow the computer to update from Trend Micro's ActiveUpdate server and all end-user clients are set to connect to this server if they lose connection with our OfficeScan servers.
A- Roaming clients are commonly notebook computers with the OfficeScan client program installation. These clients continue to provide virus protection, but have delays in sending their status to the server.

Roaming privileges are normally assigned to clients that are disconnected from the server for an extended period of time. When a client is granted roaming privileges, it can update itself directly from the Trend Micro ActiveUpdate server by clicking Update Now! on the OfficeScan shortcut menu.

Enable roaming mode to prevent the OfficeScan server from automatically sending updated components and notifications to clients (excluding Manual Deployment). However, roaming clients can still perform updates. To enable roaming mode on your computer:

  1. Right click the OfficeScan icon in the system tray.
  2. Select Enable Roaming Mode. The OfficeScan Client icon in your system tray changes to the roaming mode icon.
To return to normal mode, select Disable Roaming Mode. Go Back to List of Questions

Can the OfficeScan client be configured to require a password to uninstall?
Yes, this requires a special configuration request. You will need to call the UTS Help Desk at 777-1800 and place a work order to have a group set up for your clients with special privileges. Information that will be needed include computer names for all users. Go Back to List of Questions

When I click on the Damage Cleanup Services to scan and remove spyware, it takes a long time. Is this normal?
One of the advantages of TrendMicro Office Scan, is that it offers spyware removal service. For computers that have never been through spyware removal, this process may take several minutes. This is normal. Your computer is being checked for malicious programs and TrendMicro Office Scan is removing these for your protection. Go Back to List of Questions

Since TrendMicro Office Scan offers spyware protection, should I stop using the spyware protection that I already have?
Trend does scan for Spyware but cannot remove all of it. Please continue to use your current Spyware tools (Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc.) in addition to TrendMicro Office Scan. Go Back to List of Questions

I have a Linux or Netware operating system. Should I run TrendMicro?
Yes . The only people who do not need TrendMicro are Macintosh Operating System users. All Mac users will continue to use their current antivirus protection, McAfee Virex. What about regional campuses? Do we still need to use TrendMicro?
The change to TrendMicro is in effect for all University campuses. If you do not see the option in VIP to download this software, please contact the UTS Help Desk at 777-1800 and choose Option 2 for Software Distribution Go Back to List of Questions

I noticed the option on my OfficeScan client to scan mail. Do I need to enable this option to ensure that my mail is safe?
If your email system is scanning your mail, this is not necessary or advised. For most people on the USC campus, there are already spyware and virus scans being run on your University e-mail, so this is not necessary. The default OfficeScan client installation scans all files, including email attachments, as they are opened and will not allow file execution if a virus is detected. The Scan Mail function is designed to scan email stored and viewed on the email server if the server doesn't have its own antivirus. Our research found the Scan Mail function to be incompatible with our GroupWise configuration. Go Back to List of Questions

Why is the University switching to TrendMicro?
The annual licensing agreement with McAfee AntiVirus Software ends on August 31, 2006. University Technology Services evaluated the leading anti-virus and anti-spyware solutions and procured the TrendMicro products because it provides excellent antivirus protection, superior anti-spyware capability as compared to others, and an optimal level of integration with the Exchange email system. How do I install TrendMicro from a client disk image?
Disk imaging technology allows you to create an image of an OfficeScan client and make clones of it to other computers on your network.

Each client installation needs a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID), so that the server can identify your clients individually. Use an OfficeScan program called ImgSetup.exe to create a different GUID for each of the clones.

Note: The computers you are installing to must have the same Windows platform type as the source computer. There are two types of Windows platforms: Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2003 For example, if the source OfficeScan client machine is running Windows XP, you can only create clones for computers running Windows NT, 2000, XP, or Server 2003, not Windows 95, 98 or Me.

To create a disk image of an OfficeScan client:

  1. Obtain disk imaging software.
  2. Install the OfficeScan client to a computer. You will use this client as the source of the disk image.
  3. Copy ImgSetup.exe to this computer from https://software.csd.sc.edu/avtools/TMImagingTool/ImageSetup.zip
  4. Run ImgSetup.exe on this computer. OfficeScan creates A RUN registry key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  5. Create a disk image of the OfficeScan client using your disk imaging software.
  6. Restart the clone. ImgSetup.exe will automatically start and create one new GUID value. The client will report this new GUID to the server and the server will create a new record for the new client.
** Warning: To avoid having two computers with the same name in the OfficeScan database, remember to manually change the computer name or domain name of the cloned OfficeScan client. Go Back to List of Questions

Why does Windows XP report that OfficeScan is out of date, and the Update Now option is unavailable?

The windows hotfix KB892489 corrects a memory leak that can occur in Windows XP SP2. The symptoms caused by this issue are explained further at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892489/en-us
