Wired Networking at South Carolina

At the University of South Carolina, residence halls, offices, conference areas, and some common areas have wired network access jacks.

To connect to the wired network, you must have a wired network card or jack in your computer, and a Cat5e network cable to connect between your computer and the wall jack.

Getting Started

Before connecting to the wired University network, please do the following:

  1. Run your operating system updates.
    • For Windows users, go to the Microsoft Update site
    • For Mac users, click on the Apple, and select Software Update
  2. Install and update your anti-virus program.
    • The University provides FREE anti-virus software. You can download it from VIP.
      • Log in to VIP
      • Click on Technology in the left menu
      • Select Software Distribution
      • Select Home (for student or personal computers) or Office (for department computers)
      • Select the Wireless Access for your operating system
      • For Windows, select Trend Micro. For Mac, select McAfee
  3. Know your University network username and password.
You can find this on VIP under Technology.

Wired Networking for Faculty/Staff

All University faculty and staff have access to the network.

For departments under a Service Level Agreement with University Technology Services, network connecting and maintenance is handled by UTS. Check with your departmental administrator to see if you have UTS network support, or call the UTS Help Desk at 803-777-1800.

If your department does not have a service agreement with UTS, your setup and maintenance will be provided by your network manager.

As a Univeristy faculty/staff member, you will need your network username and password to access the University network:

    1. Log into VIP
    2. Click on Technology in the left menu
    3. Click on Network Username
    4. Your network username should be displayed. You may set or change your password on that page by following the instructions

When you boot your computer, you will be prompted for your username and password. If the login is successful, you should automatically be connected to the University network.
