Computer Checklist for Graduating Students
Congratulations on graduating from the University of South Carolina!
Before or after you graduate, please read this list and take the
appropriate actions to make sure your transition from USC is as smooth
as possible.
- E-mail
Your USC Gamecock E-mail address will expire one year after you
graduate. For graduate students, this will expire two years following
your completed coursework. It is recommended that you create a new
email account to use after this occurs. Most Internet Service
Providers provide email accounts to their customers. Websites such as
Yahoo!, Hotmail and Google provide free web-based email.
To make the transition easier, you have a few options. You can setup
email forwarding. This will send any emails sent to your GEM account
to any account you specify. Make sure you let people in your address
book know of your new (or forwarding) address.
Also, any e-mail that is still saved on your GEM account will not
automatically be forwarded. You will need to manually forward any
messages you wish to keep to your new e-mail address.
You can export your personal address book from GEM by logging in,
choosing Address Book from the bottom menu and choosing the
Import/Export option from the top menu. At the bottom, there will be
an option to Export your address book to a Comma-Separated Value
(CSV) file which can then be opened with Notepad or similar
applications.
If you have setup an alias email address, it will stop working when
you become an inactive student.
- Network Username
Your network username will be active for 1 year for
undergraduates, 2 years for graduate students. This means that
anything you have accessed with your network username will be denied
after this period is over (including Blackboard, GEM, wireless access,
etc.).
- Blackboard
You will have access to Blackboard as long as your network
username is active. For undergraduates, this is 1 year following
graduation. For graduates, this is 2 years following graduation.
- ListServ
Make sure you unsubscribe yourself from any email listserv or
group that you have been using. This will keep unwanted mail out of
your inbox after your graduation. Some professors may remove you from
the list after you graduate, but you may want to double check.
- VIP
You will continue to have access to VIP after graduation (there is
no time limit). You will be able to check grades, financial
information, transcript requests and other personal information.
- Anti-virus Software
You are entitled to McAfee VirusScan software only while you are a
student at the University of South Carolina. You must remove this upon
graduation. You can do this by going to "Add or Remove Programs" in
the Control Panel.
It is strongly recommended that you purchase a personal license and
buy anti- virus software for your computer after removing the USC-licensed
McAfee software from your computer. This will be beneficial for your
future computer usage.
- Cisco CleanAccess
You are also required to remove the CleanAccess client from your
computer. You can do this by going to the “Add or Remove Programs” in
the Control Panel. This client only works inside the residence hall
rooms and on the USC Wireless Network.
- Wireless Access
After you graduate you will no longer be considered a student. You
will need to remove the VPN client from your computer along with
deleting your student SSID (wireless network username) from your
wireless card.
- Network Storage
You should back up any information you have saved to any network
drive (or G: drive) or your GEM account. You can do this by saving
either to your hard drive, a flash drive or CD-R. You can also email
them to your new email address. Keep in mind that you can only
send email files less than 10 MB.
- Webpage
Free web space is available through Yahoo Geocities if you would
like to continue to keep an active website. Most Internet Service
Providers also provide their customers with web space.
- Student Education Discounts
As a student, you are able to get education discounts on a variety
of software and computer equipment (through selected companies). After
graduating, you will no longer be able to receive these discounts.
- Telephone Services
All outstanding telephone services must be paid in full before
leaving the university. Telephone services includes voice mail and
authorization codes. Failure to pay these accounts could result in a
hold being placed on your official records, which could cause a delay
in process paperwork for graduation. Failure to pay could also
mean information being sent to a collection agency.
